Elon Musk has announced that 100 starlink satellites are now active in Iran to provide internet connectivity to people. The country, where the government has blocked access to the internet, is witnessing a wave of anti-government protests against the mandatory hijab law.
Replying to a tweet by Wall Street Silver, Musk said, “Approaching 100 Starlinks active in Iran.” Musk is one of the 575,000+ followers of the Wall Street Silver Twitter handle.
Musk announced in September that he would bring Starlink to the country because the Iranian authorities have imposed strict restrictions. The people have long used VPNs to access sites blocked in Iran.
Iranians are protesting the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini following her arrest in Tehran. It was alleged that she breached the country’s strict dress code for women.
This is not the first time that the Internet has been blocked in the country. It saw a nationwide protest in November 2019 following a sudden jump in fuel prices.
Starlink satellites in Ukraine
Earlier this year, Musk also provided Starlink satellite internet in war-torn Ukraine. The European country now has 20,000 satellites providing internet to people. However, reports emerged citing Ukrainian troops that SpaceX’s starlink stopped working when soldiers liberated territory.
In response to a tweet that had a link to the report, Musk tweeted that the operation of providing internet to Ukraine has “cost SpaceX $80 million and will exceed $100 million by the end of the year.” CNN later reported that SpaceX sent a letter to the Pentagon saying it can’t continue to fund the Starlink service as it has.
The letter reportedly requested the Pentagon to take over the funding for Ukraine’s government and military use of Starlink. SpaceX reportedly claimed that the use could cost close to $400 million for the next 12 months.
