Networks, keep delivering

When tragedy strikes a community, when chaos reigns in a city, when a lockdown consumes a country, when a pandemic shuts down the world – times of crisis are when we need our networks the most. Networks of loved ones provide support; networks of colleagues create business continuity. Networks of healthcare providers, first responders and other important services share information in their quest to keep us safe and healthy. During times like these, we depend on our networks to keep us connected and keep us going. And during those same times, the heart of those networks must keep beating.

When networks are on the frontline, how do they respond and how do we expect them to respond? The answer to those questions needs to be the same – always on, anywhere, anytime.

Building and operating modern networking infrastructure that stands up when we need it most is complicated. The results of Nokia’s analysis of several networks during the first week of country-wide lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic are unprecedented. Family video chats, children learning from their laptops, co-workers videoconferencing and collaborating online, and work-from-home traffic are all driving huge increases in traffic. Much of this traffic is bi-directional, impacting both upstream and downstream, and much of it is latency sensitive with no tolerance for poor service quality.

This is not a test – and 5G and fixed broadband networks are stepping up to meet the challenge. Quality networks are a core building block of our society. At their heart is the IP and Optical network through which consumer, business and industrial traffic is routed and transported. These critical networking systems depend on three things:

  • Scalable and assured network performance
  • Robust and secure network infrastructure
  • Efficient and programmable network architecture

When a network is designed and built around these principles, then it is ready to deliver. No matter the crisis, the network responds quickly and gracefully, ensuring continuity of relationships, business and life when all of those seem threatened by circumstances we cannot control.

Nokia’s singular focus has always been delivering quality solutions and expertise to solve the world’s most critical networking challenges. We are proud to be the trusted systems partner of many of the Communications Service Providers (CSPs), Mobile Service Operators (MSOs), Enterprises and webscale companies who are helping the world get through the COVID-19 pandemic.
